The place to be for LGBTQ+ & ally students in Groningen.
We are the oldest queer student association in the Netherlands! With over 180 members from all walks of life, we're a fun and vibrant place where students in Groningen can truly be themselves. Drop by during one of our many open drinks nights and activities - everyone is welcome!
EVENTS
There is no shortage of things to do in Ganymedes. We organise a wide range of events, ranging from bowling to parties to presentations from experts in LGBTQ+ related topics. Additionally, we have drinks every Thursday at 9:00 PM. There's really something for everyone, every single month.
Nervous about going to an activity for the first time alone? Fear not, we have a Buddy System: a Gany member can meet up with you beforehand so that you can go together to the event.

Committees
Ganymedes has plenty of fun activities every month. Of course, this is only possible thanks to our wonderful committees, which consist of our members. They organise most of our activities, including the annual trip and introduction camp, but also support the board, by promoting events or processing complaints. Each committee is unique and every one of them presents its own fun challenges and opportunities. Plus, members of every committee get exclusive access to special Active Members events.
With 15 different committees, there is for sure one that is a perfect match for you!

What are the benefits of a Ganymedes membership?Becoming a member gives you full access to everything Ganymedes has to offer. Primarily, that means that you now have access to our members-only events. These include the monthly Book Club meetings, annual camp and international trip, and many others. You're also getting a membership bracelet to show everyone that you are a Ganymedian. With the bracelet, you get a discount on the Thursday Drinks at Tram 13. You also frequently get massive discounts on our paid open events. As a member, you're able to contribute to the association and have a say in its direction. The most common way to do that is by joining one of our committees, which in turn makes you an Active Member, giving you access to a separate group chat and occasional exclusive events. WO & HBO students can also vote at our General Members Assembly, where the most important decisions in the association are taken. Beyond all the practical benefits, when you become a member, you're joining a wonderful, open and supportive community. You'll have access to the WhatsApp group chat with our members, where you can ask questions, share how your life is going or just send memes.💜

What does the name "Ganymedes" mean?In Greek mythology, Zeus had a frequent habit of falling for mortals and then transforming into various animals to meet them. Among the many women, there was one man who Zeus fell for and his name was Ganymede or Ganymedes. In the Iliad, Homer describes Ganymedes as "the loveliest born of the race of mortals". As an eagle, Zeus lifted Ganymedes up to Olympus, where he was granted immortality and became the cup bearer of the gods. Note that there can be various interpretations of Greek myths and the version presented above is just one of them.

Is Ganymedes welcoming to international students?Yes, very much so! Most of our official communication is done both in Dutch and English. At our events and in our members group chat, English is the predominant language.

How does Ganymedes protect my Privacy? We understand that privacy is an important topic for everyone, especially in LGBTQ+ spaces. This is why we make sure that photos and videos with you at our events are posted only with your consent! Here are the measures we take: We maintain a "no-photo list". You can indicate whether you want to be on this list when you become a member, or later, by talking with our board members. After taking a photo or video where your face is clearly visible, we will ask you if you allow us to post it on our socials. If the answer is no, we will delete it.

However you identify as, whatever background you may have, if you want to have a good time at our "gezellige" events, then we want you to feel welcome. It is possible to come by our open events even if you are not currently studying. However, only students can become members.
